Lamb & Lazio Wine Dinner at Amis in Philly

The team at Philly’s Rome-inspired restaurant Amis and I hosted a very special dinner whole lamb feast. Chefs Brad Spence, Ned Maddock and the crew butchered a whole lamb for the event and beverage director Steve Wildy poured amazing, wines bee, and a house made digestive.

Pizza and Wine Event with Jim Lahey

To celebrate the Italian release of Jim Lahey’s landmark book My Bread: The Revolutionary No-Work, No-Knead Method (Pane Senza Impasto, Jim and I co-hosted a pizza and wine pairing event at Pizzeria Emma in central Rome. Jim prepared three pizzas, which were preceded by Emma’s fantastic fried starters. Each course was paired with wine.

Italian craft beer event in Philadelphia, PA

This casual tasting at craft beer bar Alla Spina for was dedicated to the world of Italian brews. I co-hosted the event with the Temple University Craft Beer Enthusiasts and I chose the menu to reflect the styles and brewers which best represent quality production in Italy. We drank Baladin‘s Nora, Birrificio Italiano‘s Cassissona, the Dogfish Head/Baladin/Borgo collaborative archeo-beer Birra Etrusca, and (my favorite) Lover Beer‘s D’Uva Beer.

This charity lunch co-hosted by the founders of The Rome Digest raised funds for the Green Releaf Initiative and their rebuilding efforts in the Philipines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.

Pizza & Beer Event with Gabriele Bonci, Brooklyn

Rome’s greatest baker, Gabriele Bonci, and I co-hosted a pizza and beer event at Paulie Gee’s in Brooklyn. Bonci made pizzas and pork neck cooked in bread crust, while I poured Italian craft beers.

I conducted a tasting seminar at the first edition of Fermentazioni. Topics included Italian craft beer history, terroir and culture and we tasted 6 beers, including a rarity from my cellar.

I hosted an Italian craft beer dinner with my friends Maryann Terillo and Elisa Sarno at their Greenwich Village restaurant Bistro de la Gare. Each course was paired with Italian craft beers from quality producers. We raised $350 for the Food Bank for NYC.

Hande Leimer, Rome’s leading wine educator, and I hosted an informal wine tasting at Il Bacocco in Trastevere. We tasted two wines paired with typical products from Lazio provided by DOL and raised €250 for A Chi Serve, a new food rescue organization. For more information, check out my post on the topic.

Porsena, NYC

Chef Sara Jenkins and I presented a sensory journey through the flavors of Rome and Lazio. The seven-course dinner at Sara’s restaurant Porsena was assembled to illuminate the characteristics and concepts of Italian regional cuisine. Dishes were accompanied by cultural and historical descriptions and personal anecdotes. We raised $620 for City Harvest, a food rescue organization based in NYC.

More than 120 gelato and aperitivo lovers gathered for the first Parla Food event, hosted in cooperation with Il Gelato and A Chi Serve. Savory gelato was served with a glass of wine and €1 from each serving was donated to charity. We raised over €120 for those in need.
